What makes PLDC so different?

Fourth reason: The selected papers and discussions reflect the future of the market and not the past.

The way the PLDC programme is put together is globally unique.

There are a number of conferences, fairs and gatherings on architectural lighting design that take place around the world in the course of a year. So why do so many lighting designers and lighting specialists appreciate PLDC so much and take the time to be part of this event? What is it that makes PLDC so special that some design practices close down altogether for almost one week to be able to attend?

Papers presented at PLDC are blind reviewed and checked by three professional individuals before being selected for the programme. It is not names that play a role in the selection process, but the topic itself and its relevance for the lighting design market and community. The Paper Reviewing Committee comprises practising lighting designers and experts in various fields related to lighting. Topics already known to the experts, and generally known in the market, or those which are assessed as not entirely relevant, are not considered for inclusion in the conference programme. One of the conditions for being shortlisted for the programme is defined in the Call for Papers: the paper is not to have been presented before in public.

Based on the recommendations of the paper reviewers, the PLDC Steering Committee then puts together the altogether four-day programme.

Which is why Tapio Rosenius described PLDC in 2015 as an international “Thought Leadership Event” for the lighting design community. This is where leading lighting designers meet to exchange ideas, and where topics relevant for the future of lighting design practice are discussed. And it is not only practising lighting planners who come to PLDC to talk and learn about a wide range of subjects. Educators and researchers in the field of lighting are also present. And PLDC is also the platform for discussing important topics for the future with manufacturers’ R&D departments. No other lighting design event attracts so many high-quality, experienced specialists from lighting design practice, research, education and the lighting industry. PLDC is therefore a meeting point for all those involved in the lighting design world. Every two years, this event gives rise to signs of – and inspiration for – upcoming trends and developments.

Topics of interest and importance are not only confined to the conference programme, however. Open moderated discussions will also take place, as will Think Tanks dedicated to discussing and debating ideas and measures for the development of concrete issues.

The presence of a large number of professional associations demonstrates and supports the close relationship PLDC has with the professional bodies who can consequently define and align their activities to real-time developments.

All of which makes PLDC an exciting meeting place with global impact and is therefore a must for all who value keeping in line with developments.
