Early Career Researchers’ meeting

Early Career Researchers’ meeting

Following the highly informative and productive Early Career Researchers’ meeting in Wismar, PLDC invited interested pre-docs and post-docs to evaluate the changes and developments since the last meeting and discuss the next concrete steps to be taken to coordinate and structure the lighting research landscape.

The meeting took place on 1. November, 2017, at the Palais des Congrès, Paris. The  programme of the meeting can be downloaded here.

The meeting was moderated by Alison Ritter and Dr. Amardeep Dugar, and began with a brief resumé of discussions held with a group of Early Career Researchers and their wish to establish a website or portal to bridge the gap to the practising lighting design community.

In this context, Prof. Werner Osterhaus, who was part of the Think/Do Tank on Education and the Profession from the start, reported on: The inclusion of Research Methodology in the Core Curriculum for academic institutions. There is a significant amount of research being undertaken that is highly relevant for lighting designers and those decision-makers who commission design practices to develop lighting design concepts for interior and exterior projects of different kinds.

Dr. Amardeep Dugar then gave a presentation on: Scientific training and critical assessment techniques – short-term goals for long-term effect, using the topic of his PhD thesis on “Tangible Lighting Controls” (Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington/NZ, 2010) to demonstrate the Planning, Building, Analysing and Communicating aspects of performing research.

To conclude: The publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals is part of the recognition process within the academic milieu, but there is a need to go beyond this and reach out to the design community and key decision-makers in order to be able to make a difference and raise the quality of design.

The full report will be published in the next PLD magazine.

Follow-up to PLDC 2017 in Paris

Specific educators are interested in restarting the Educators’ Network initiative. An idea would be to hold a next meeting at Light+Building 2018 in Frankfurt/DE
